2008 Canadian Masters Championship Cancelled
It is with regret that Rowing Canada Aviron (RCA) announces the cancellation of the 2008 Canadian Masters Championships. The regatta was to be hosted by the Guelph Rowing Club (GRC) from August 15th-17th.
The Canadian Masters Championship runs annually in Canada and alternates between the east and west with an average participation of approximately 400 athletes. As of August 1st, the number of entrants was disappointingly low – only 166. It is not financially feasible to run a successful regatta under these circumstances.
A number of meetings have been held between RCA and GRC in an attempt to find a solution to this problem. Unfortunately, a solution was not possible. RCA regrets this course of action but would rather cancel the regatta than provide a less than optimum event for the competitors.
Rowing Canada Aviron wishes to thank the Local Organizing Committee comprising of members of the Guelph Rowing Club. The committee and members of the Guelph Rowing Club have volunteered countless hours over the last two years. The GRC has developed an impressive rowing site that will certainly be well utilized in years to come.
Rowing Canada Aviron and the Guelph Rowing Club would like to acknowledge and thank the athletes who have registered for the Canadian Masters Championships. The organizing committee will arrange for the refund of entry fees.

In recent weeks you have all generously offered your support and time to help stage the Rowing Canada Aviron Canadian Masters Rowing Championships planned for August 15/16/17 at Guelph Lake.
It is my unpleasant task to inform you that Rowing Canada Aviron has cancelled the event and we will not need your assistance at this time as the regatta is cancelled entirely.
For the high school students who had contacted me, there may be other hours of volunteering that Guelph Rowing Club could offer you later in the year.
I apologize in all sincerity for any arrangements that you may have made in anticipation of your volunteer work at this regatta, but the decision to cancel was beyond our control.
It is a great disappointment to us all.
Personally, I feel very grateful for the way in which people have contacted me and offered their time to help stage the Canadian Masters Rowing Championships and also for the previous assistance that you gave to the Guelph Rowing Club to stage our first major successful CORA Regatta for 450 competitors this past June 28. On behalf or the Guelph Rowing Club I extend sincere appreciation for your support and dedication to this event.
High School students who are interested in future events and opportunities this fall with the Guelph Rowing Club please forward your interest by e-mail to guelphrowing@sympatico.ca Thank you,
Pat Zulinov
